Let’s face it, becoming a teenager is something we look forward to as a child, however it also comes with a lot of unexpected challenges. Think about it…we go through puberty, our hormones change and we aren’t sure who we are anymore. Our looks change (your skin might even start to break out). It’s the time in our lives where we go through a ton of transitions. While it’s an adventure for most, it can also be a chapter in our lives where we find our identity and really blossom into the young adult we will be from here on out.
I can remember my freshman year. Boy was I nervous to transition to high school! There were so many firsts for me. This year my oldest son became a freshman, and as I started thinking about all of the changes he would go through I was reminded of the changes I once went through—transitioning into a young adult myself.
From Family Christian’s Website:
This is a year filled with some really important questions: How can you make wise choices? How can you create good habits? How can you make faith a priority, not just another “thing” in your life?
Lars Rood is your guide for this adventure. (He’s the author of the Freshman Devotional we reviewed). He’s a pastor, an author, a former high school teacher, and the dad of three children who aren’t too far away from beginning their own high school journeys.
Each entry in this devotional will walk you through an important moment, issue, or opportunity that defines your freshman year, along with ideas on living out what you believe. In other words, this isn’t just a book you read–it’s a book that leads to action.
My hope was that my freshman son would read this book and share his thoughts with me. I didn’t quite get what I had hoped for. He is reading the devotional, however he wasn’t real elaborate on sharing his thoughts. He’s a teenage boy and they like to keep things simple.
Me: So, what did you think of the Freshman devotional I got for you?
Freshman: It’s cool.
Me: Cool? Really, so you like it?
Freshman: Yeah, it’s cool.
And there you have it—the book passed HIS test!
I assure you that if the book was anything other than cool he would have stated that it was a waste of his time or that he didn’t like it.
That my friends, is how a freshman boy responds.
