My husband and I feel that it is very important to take the time to sit down and research all of our benefit options before open enrollment. Oftentimes people are overwhelmed with the amount of paperwork associated with their benefits, therefore they simply skim through and sign. It’s very important that you read over your policy each year before signing. You just never know when something is going to change.
Keeping our family healthy is important, but being prepared for accidents (especially having 5 boys) and health issues is something that is equally as important to us as parents.
My husband and I like to set aside a day to go over everything. We try to pick a day that we know we won’t be super busy doing other things and we can stay focused. We are sure to read over everything in the policy before signing and turning things in. Sure, it’s easy to simply choose the same options year after year, but what if you could be saving money by spending the time researching your options. When you don’t research your options ahead of time it can lead to some very costly mistakes.
The 2014 Aflac Open Enrollment Survey found that 41% of employees spent 15 minutes or less researching their benefit options during the 2013 open enrollment season. This seems crazy to me! I tend to research everything (even very small purchases) I mean, think about how much time you spend researching things like a new car, planning vacation, shopping for computers or other electronics, it’s kind of sad how little time we (Americans) spend researching something as important as our insurance.
According to the 2014 Aflac Open Enrollment Survey, 90% of workers are “auto-enrolling” or keeping the same benefits year after year without taking the time to read over the benefit info, and 4 out of every 10 workers waste up to $750 each year on mistakes with their insurance benefits.
Do you fully understand your benefits?
Did you know that you can take advantage of benefits education resources to minimize the confusion during the benefits options selection process. We recommend checking out sites like Aflac and the Aflac WorkForces Report website for more information on open enrollment.
