We have crazy weather here in Ohio. One minute the weather is so nice you are making outdoor plans and the next minute it’s snowing and blowing! It really is unpredictable, and that is why we always try to be prepared before the bad weather hits. With the kids back in school we definitely want to be sure that the house is ready for the colder weather and all have a heads-up on staying healthy.
One thing we like to do to prepare is to go through the house and check for gaps in the windows or doors that may be letting air in. If there are gaps that we can’t easily fix, we may use plastic on the windows so that we can keep our home as air tight as possible. Heating a home is already expensive, we don’t want to spend any more than we have to.
Another thing that our family does, and this is something that a lot of people forget to do, is to check and change our furnace filters. We like to use Filtrete Healthy Living Filters in our house. These filters feature high performing electrostatic technology that proactively captures dust, bacteria, germs, viruses and allergens in the air. The Filtrete Healthy Living Filter captures up to 93 percent of airborne particles like pollen, smoke particles, pet dander, household dust, smog contamination, dust mite debris, lint, mold spores, bacteria and particles that can carry viruses from the air passing through the filter.
It is also very important that you make sure vents and fireplaces are inspected and cleaned before firing them up. We once had a crayon (I wonder how that got there?) lodged into one of our baseboard heaters. We failed to check before firing the heater up and had a stinky dirty mess to clean up!
How do you prepare for the cold weather?
