Yesterday started off like any other day except that we all got to sleep in. It had been snowing and blowing all night, so when we woke up Friday morning our school was on a 2 hour delay. I don’t mind 2 hour delays because they give us a little extra time to sleep in and get everyone ready for the day. However, a little later the announcement came that school would be closed for the day due to the bad weather. The boys were super excited to be spending a Friday at home.
After eating breakfast and settling in to a few cartoons I decided maybe the day wasn’t going to be as bad as I had thought. That is until the boys started to get a little restless and starting picking on one another. I think they were getting bored and being cooped up in the house is really starting to get old for Mom all of us. So, I told the boys that since if the roads looked better by lunch time we would venture out to McDonalds for some fish sandwiches for lunch. This excited them!
So I jump in the shower and when I get out the boys had straightened their things up in the living room and dining room. They REALLY wanted to go to McDonalds! How could I deny them of it now, right?
And then my day all went downhill…everyone is getting ready and I go into the bathroom to start putting my makeup on when I hear a loud thump following by a cry, and not just any cry a very hurt cry. If you are a mother I’m sure you know what I am talking about. There is a difference between the “he took my toy cry” and the “I’m really hurt cry.”
I go flying out of the bathroom to see what has happened and I see my 21 month old laying at the bottom of the steps! I scoop him up in my arms and run to the living room with him. We sit on the couch as I look him over. He is still crying, but I don’t see anything wrong….Yet. It only took about a minute for the knot on his head to show up. By knot I mean HUGE goose egg. Check out the pics. Wouldn’t that totally freak you out? I was scared! I take him to the bathroom and strip him down because I want to make sure the rest of his body is ok. As I examine him I see that his body is a little red, so I throw him in the tub for a minute just to try to calm him down and see if the red marks go away. It helped! I get him out of the tub and dress him. I then call my hubby at work and leave him a very frantic message on his voicemail. (I still feel bad for that! I probably scared the crap out of him!) I hang up and call my Mom. She says she will leave right away and will watch the boys so I don’t have to take them all to the hospital with me. We have had injuries to the head in the past and I know that you really just need to watch them and that if the bump goes out rather than in and they aren’t acting strangely then they are probably fine. I know this, but this is my baby and this knot is just freaking me out, so I have to take him to the ER for my own piece of mind. I don’t ever want to say…what if? You know?
In the meantime my hubby calls and says he is on his way home. He’s a little lot freaked out and tells me to just call my Mom because the roads are bad and there is no need for her to drive all the way over since he is on his way and he is a lot closer. So, I call my Mom and talk her into going back home. I assure her that I will call and update her when I get a chance.
When my hubby gets here, which seemed like forever even though it wasn’t that long, I rushed out the door and headed to the hospital. Luckily my little guy had been eating off and on all day because we totally skipped lunch. (We had been heading to McDonalds just before the fall, remember?)
We get to the ER, they do a ct of his head and an x-ray of his collar bone (it was a little red and he didn’t like it when we touched it, so they wanted to make sure it wasn’t broken.) An hour and a half later we were informed that he was fine and were able to leave the hospital. My poor little guy just kept saying Mommy I’m hungry let’s go bye bye the whole time we were there. I am just so relieved that he is fine!
I’m sure you all want to know what happened to cause this little guy to go tumbling down the stairs. He has been walking up and down the stairs for some time now. We tried gates, but he would just find a way over them or around them. He’s good! Eventually after we saw how good he could maneuver the stairs we just gave in. He was only allowed upstairs though if his brothers were with him. Ok, I’m getting to the point. Two of his brothers were with him.
This is the story, and everyone’s sticking to it…
The baby tried to ride the big exercise ball down the steps! Yep, that’s what they tell me! I’m told that my 21 month old and 6 year old were at the top of the stairs (21 month old was about 2 steps down) and my 4 year old started to walk up the stairs with the large exercise ball. (The one that they know they aren’t allowed to take up the stairs, but for some reason up it was going.) 4 year old gets to the 21 month old with the ball and 21 month old leans forward arms out and jumps on the ball. 6 year old says 21 month old does a flip in the air and rolls down the stairs! Scary huh? Of course it’s no ones fault but the BALL!
The ball is now out of sight, and I believe my hubby either popped it or kicked it to the moon! Darn ball…hurting my baby!
Oh, and the boys did get their fish sandwiches, it was just a little later than we had expected. What a day!
