On Calvary’s Hill by Max Lucado
I am quickly becoming a very big fan of Max Lucado. I had enjoyed listening to him speak, but had never read any of his books…until this year. Now, I can’t seem to get enough of them and I’m anxiously awaiting the next to arrive as soon as I have finished the first. When On Calvary’s Hill arrived I knew I wanted to set back some time to read the book. You must not forget that I’m still a super busy homeschooling mom of 5 boys, so time is very limited. I think it is very important that we take a little time out of our busy lives to rest, and reading is great rest for my body, mind and soul. Now, with that being said, the book that I thought would take me days was finished in just a couple of hours! I love those books that you can’t put down until you have completely finished them!
On Calvary’s Hill allows us to explore the final days in the life of Christ. We can draw near to the Savior and envision through Max Lucado’s words, what it might have been like when Christ sacrificed His own life for us, dying on the cross, so that we could be forgiven of our sins and have eternal life in heaven.
I love how Max Lucado describes the moment where Jesus washes his disciples’ feet. He speaks of Jesus silently lifting the feet of his betrayer (because he already knew one of those men in that room-the men he loved and trusted-would soon betray him) and he washes those feet in a basin.
Quoted from the book…
“He forgave their sin before they even committed it. He offered mercy before they even sought it.”
This is so important to remember. Jesus knew someone was about to betray him, yet he forgave him.
I have folded the corners of so many pages in this book. My plan was to share with you many of the parts of the book that touched me, however I’m only going to share a couple because I want you to read the book for yourself. I know life is busy, but this book is a very quick read and it won’t take you much time at all. I really do think you’ll be thankful you took the time to relax and read this book.
Another quote from the book that I feel compelled to share with you is this…
“As long as you hate your enemy, a jail door is closed and a prisoner is taken. But when you try to understand and release your foe from your hatred, then the prisoner is released, and that prisoner is you.”
How perfect are the words written above? How many times have we been hurt and angered by someone, yet we were not able to move on? God calls us to love our neighbors and forgive those who have done wrong against us. Why dwell on something we cannot change for all it will do is prolong the inevitable. We must set ourselves and those who have done wrong against us free in order to truly be happy and move on.
I’ve been hearing the story of Christ’s death since I was a child. I can picture it in my head, yet when I read this book I had such a clear vision of what it must have been like for Jesus. How could one man go through all that he endured for the sake of myself…and You?
It brings tears to my eyes to think about the agony and pain that Christ endured for me. He didn’t have to do it. He chose to go through every pain and every sorrow so that we could be forgiven and live a life of eternity. How awesome is that?
I know life is busy and schedules are hectic, but I highly recommend you take a moment of your time to sit down and read On Calvary’s Hill by Max Lucado.

I love Max Lucado! Great reminder not to hold onto anger. This sounds like a great book and the fact you were able to read it so quickly is helpful. I love to read but it can be hard with the kiddos!
