Tiny mouths need special care, from a dentist and at home.
The Children’s Dental Health Project (CDHP) wants to make sure that expecting moms and moms of infants, get all of te perinatal care that they need to get their children started on a path of lifelong health. As a part of this campaign, CDHP wants to give ONE lucky reader a Mommy and Me Gift Basket, with goodies like Burt’s Bees Belly Balm, Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Buttermilk Bath and a natural sponge!
Pediatric dentists get additional education and training required to be able to care for a child’s developmental needs. Starting dental visits during the perinatal period-immediately before and after birth- sets up infants for preventative care and provides the proper foundation for a healthy life.
Below is CDHP’s Top Ten List for at home dental care for infants…
1.) Cavities are caused by bacteria in the mouth that can be spread from person to person.
2.)Be sure the entire family sees the dentist regularly to keep a healthy mouth and prevent the spread of cavities.
3.)Take your baby to see a dentist for the first time when his first tooth comes in or by age 1 at the latest.
4.)As soon as your baby’s teeth come in start brushing with a toothbrush and toothpaste with fluoride.
5.)It is safe to use a small smear of toothpaste with fluroide (about the size of a grain of rice) to prevent cavities even though your baby will swallow most of it.
6.)Be sure your baby drinks 1-2 ounces of water with fluoride every day to prevent cavities.
7.)Never put your baby to bed with a bottle or cup of milk or juice after his teeth have come in. Only water is OK.
8.)When your baby has teeth, encourage him to sleep through the night without feeding him in the middle of the night.
9.)Only give your baby 4-5 ounces of juice or less every day.
10.)Encourage your baby to stop suckin his thumb, fingers or pacifier early, by age 3 at the latest, to prevent orthodontic problems.
