I have had a rough month or two with my cloth diapers. My son was doing pretty well in the cloth diapers when we were using regular free and clear detergents, but then I started to notice a smell and my diapers were starting to leak. That is when I started to try all of the different cloth diaper detergents. Don’t get me wrong, these detergents were great and they work very well for some, but for me my son is super sensitive and they caused a rash. The first sample I tried just left him a little red, so I discontinued use. We got his little bum better, and then I tried another sample, which left his little bum a little more red. I discontinued use and got his bum better again. I was willing to try this one more time and that is when he got the blisters. I used the particular detergent (no, it is not one that I recently reviewed on my blog, so no worries if you have run out and purchased one of those.)
I have had my little guy out of the cloth diapers for a few weeks. I tried to put him back in them after stripping them and that is when I noticed he was getting a little red again, not blistery, but a little red. He only got red after 2 of the diapers he wore that day, both of which contained bamboo materials. I am now thinking that the bamboo could possibly have something to do with the breakouts as well, but I can’t say yet for sure.
I have been speaking with several different detergent makers and cloth diaper makers and Moms, and I found Milli Lee from Dypeas Cloth Diapers to be so very helpful. She has a blog post that easily states exactly what to do/use when you wash your diapers. It is not an expensive routine, and is very simple to follow. You can read her post HERE.
I hope that this post has helped some.
If you have a special wash routine I would love to hear it.
