You may have noticed that I haven’t been around as much as normal this week.
I don’t really even know where to begin when I describe the past week we had.
I’ll just start with the biggest, most unexpected event…
There was a murder in a small town near us a few months ago.
Murders don’t really happen around here so everyone in the surrounding towns has been pretty shaken up and on edge. I think just as people were starting to get back into routine and let their guards down a bit (not completely, but a bit) something happened again. There was a robbery very similar to the other robbery where two were killed. This time the robbery was in another town miles from the first, but there are a lot of similarities. Unfortunately the robbers got away, however the victims made it out safe and were able to identify the vehicle and one of the robbers that wasn’t wearing a mask. A sketch was released and again the surrounding towns were on edge and scared. I think in times like these it is best to be a little scared that way you are always paying attention to your surroundings and what is going on. You just never know when you are going to have to remember something that may not have seemed important at the time.
Since then there have been vehicles spotted and tips reported to the police, however the robbers/murderers are all still at large (and yes, there are several of them and we still don’t know if both cases are for sure related.)
So when the police reported that they were looking for a specific vehicle a couple of days ago with a juvenile possibly carrying a handgun the surrounding towns were all on edge and pretty worried. I think everyone was pretty happy that the police had a crack in the case and that they knew something, however we were scared.
(Mind you, we really were never told why they were looking for this vehicle-until later in the day-so everyone assumed the vehicle was the one of the robbers.)
Ok, here is when I get scared…
We get a phone call from the school my children attend saying that they are on lockdown.
REALLY?
Our local school has never been on lockdown.
By now rumors are flying and all I can think of is all of the school shootings I keep hearing about in the media.
What is going on?
I call my husband, who is about to get on a plane for a quick overnight business trip.
He’s worried because I don’t know what is going on and I’m scared to pieces, so he comes home to be with me and the younger boys who are still home with me.
We wait all day long, listening to rumors fly, receiving texts and phone calls left and right.
Finally, we hear that the school is just being cautious because a juvenile got into an argument at home the night before and ran away. The parents thought he may have taken a gun.
Yikes! That scares me!
So, I worry some more and then the school cancels all activities for the evening, but my kids are home safe at this point and they don’t seem to be scared or bothered by any of this. (Thank God!)
We later find out that the boy never had a gun, he simply ran away from home.
He is now home safe with his parents and all is well. (I’m so glad he is home safe. I wonder if he was scared to go home since everyone was looking for him and thinking he had a gun and might hurt someone?)
So, even though my boys were never in any immediate danger, I still feel so happy to have them home! I have been spending extra time hugging them and telling them how much I love them.
Be sure to give your children an extra hug and “I love you” today.
Even if they act like they are embarrassed, deep down they love it.
