Have you ever thought about data management? Probably not. Most people aren’t even sure what data management is, so we thought we would take some time to discuss this topic today.
What is data management?
Data management is the development, execution and supervision of plans, policies, programs and practices that control, protect, deliver and enhance the value of data and information assets.
Every online action that we take produces data that is then used for companies to better market us. Let’s face it, when you are browsing social media or doing searches on your laptop, cell phone or tablet, you are submitting data that will later be used to target you by stores or other companies wanting to sell you their products or services that are similar to the ones you have searched for or viewed online. It sounds complicated, but with data management services, it really isn’t.
These companies gather data, but then they need a data management platform so they can sort and organize the data. This can be done by using a master data management platform. This a data management platform that is hosted in the cloud. It collects, sorts and stores all information that it is connected to. The data is translated into useful forms and shows the customers (marketers, publishers) statistics so that they can decide how best to target their audience.
It really is quite interesting if you think about how far we have come in advertising and customer experience. Everything is tailored to the customer now. For the most part, you won’t have to worry about forgetting what sites you have visited if you haven’t bookmarked them because many of these sites will continue to advertise to you for a bit after you have viewed their site.
You can see peer reviews and more details about various master data management platforms on the Gartner site. The gartner master data management peer insights are very helpful in deciding which platform is right for you. It’s always a good idea to do your research, no matter what you are shopping for.
