We are driving down the road and up ahead what do I see?
A road sign of course stating Detour, Road Closed.
Where was my warning and why is this happening to me today?
I’m not real happy about this because I’m already running late.
My 3 year old in the back seat must have heard my frustration because he asked in his cute little voice, “What’s wong Mommy?”
Now I’m upset for showing my frustration in front of my little guy, but still quite upset by the slight detour, I tell him that Mommy is a little frustrated about the road signs in front of us.
My little guy doesn’t miss a beat and he says, I know what an octagon is Mommy. A stop sign is like an octagon!
Now he’s pretty excited about this and I know that he has no idea that this totally has nothing to do with the sign in front of us, but his excitement makes me feel better about the whole situation and I reply, “You are right buddy, a stop sign is an octagon!”
I think sometimes it takes little things like this for us to sit back and realize that sometimes the things that we think are ruining our day really aren’t so bad. You know what came from this detour? I got to spend a few more minutes in the car with my sweet boys who were all telling me silly stories and jokes along the way. That’s not so bad, right?
Don’t let those detour signs or parking signs get in your way. Life is all about obstacles, it’s just the way you choose to get around those obstacles that really counts. Try going about your day with a smile on your face the whole day. See how much better you feel. Also, try giving someone (anyone) a compliment, and see how much better YOU feel. It’s great, giving others compliments can really make you feel good about yourself.
