Finding different things to do in the summer can sometimes be a challenge. When school is out, kids tend to get bored, especially when they are doing the same ol’ thing over and over again. If you are like me, you want to keep those kiddos active and busy so boredom doesn’t set in. I thought I would share some of our favorite outdoor activities that we enjoy during the summer months.
Fun Outdoor Activities During Summer Months
Go Fly a Kite– I mean, our parents have been saying this to us for years, but honestly get out and fly a kite! It’s great fun and kids really enjoy it!
Ride Bikes– Riding bikes can be fun for the whole family, and it’s great exercise as well!
Take a Walk– Going for a walk is a great way to get exercise, but it’s also a great way to sightsee. Make it even more fun by going on a scavenger hunt, or challenging kids to find certain things along the way (such as 2 pinecones, a specific leaf, or a landmark in town).
Blow Bubbles– There are so many different types of bubble wands these days. You can even purchase bubble-making machines!
Play Tag– Playing tag might sound like something for the younger kids, but it can also be fun for adults. Change things up a bit by playing freeze tag, or another form of tag that you enjoyed yourself as a kid.
Hopscotch– Hopscotch is something many of us enjoyed in our youth. This can still be fun to enjoy with our children. We even have hopscotch challenges from time to time.
Jumprope– Jump by yourself, or with multiple people. You can use more than one jump rope if you are really adventurous.
Sack or Relay Race– If there are enough of you, you can set up a sack race, or a relay race. Pick teams to make it an even more fun competition!
Scavenger Hunt– Set up a scavenger hunt for the kids to enjoy! This can be a lot of fun, and more than likely they will want to do this on a regular basis.
Water Balloon Fight– This is especially fun on hot summer days!
Slip n Slide or Pool Fun– Playing in the water on hot summer days can be a lot of fun for everyone!
Kickball or Wiffleball– Not only is this great exercise, but it’s a ton of fun also! Split into teams and challenge the kids and their friends!
Hide n Seek– Playing hide n seek isn’t just fun for little ones. It can be a great time for all ages, especially if you have really good places to hide. We find playing outdoors to be more fun!
Plant a Garden– Enlist the whole family to help when planting the garden. This is something that you can take great pride in for quite some time. When you care for and grow your own food, it’s extra special.
Go Fishing– Pack a lunch and some fishing poles and head for the nearest water hole for a fun day of fishing.
Paint and Hide Rocks– Hiding rocks for other kids in the neighborhood to find, and finding rocks that others have hidden can be a lot of fun. Many towns have Facebook pages devoted to rock hiding. Here is a post we did about painting and hiding rocks–> Paint/Hide Rocks
Outdoor Games– Cornhole, ladder golf, bocce ball, yard darts, croquet, soccer, football, basketball, life-sized Jenga, and so forth.
Do you have anything to add to our list of Fun Outdoor Activities?
We’d love to hear what you enjoy doing outdoors!
