When it comes to electronics and all of the latest gadgets I admit that my 11 year old can probably figure out more than I can. Actually, sometimes he is the one who shows me how to do things. If you remember right, he once told me that I was uncool because I still use google search engine while the younger kids are using bing. HUH? I got over it, and I’m still using my “old school” methods that I know and love, however I do like to have all of the latest and greatest gadgets.
For my birthday earlier this year my husband and boys surprised me with an iPad. I had heard of this cool new device, however I was clueless how I was going to use it. What do you mean I have to purchase apps for it? I didn’t want to spend money! (Am I tight or what?) I was pretty excited though when my 11 year old showed me that I could get quite a few apps for free! (Lame, I know…but I was.) Did you know they even make an app for stock trading? Who knew? You can do so much with your iPad, or even your phone! I love how technology has evolved.
Speaking of phones, about a month ago my contract was up with my current cell phone provider. I had a smartphone, but really needed a new one as my old one was not working well at all. I went into the cell phone store completely clueless and unsure of what I was going to get. I came out with an awesome new phone that unfortunately is so smart I still don’t know how to work everything on it! Yikes!
So when my husband decides that he needs to run into the hardware store while the boys and I sit in the car, I have a little fun checking out all of the apps on my new phone. One day I will have this all down pat and maybe my grandma will be able to come to me for advice on electronics (lord knows she is probably the only one less advanced than me, but then again…is she?) Before we know it I will be sitting back in my chair (that has a built in massager), with my headphones in my ears (that are attached to my iPod touch), listening to music, while I trade stock on my cell phone or iPad, as I watch my flat screen television. Yep, that’s what this world is coming to. We live in a fast paced world of electronics. But really, what would we do without all of these modern conveniences? We have all come to love them so much that we sometimes forget what it is like without them.
Have you ever had one of your favorite appliances or electronics break? Something that you don’t necessarily “need”, but you have been using it for so long that without it you really feel clueless? I have, and boy is it rough. I often say, what would I do without my cell phone, or what would I do without my answering machine, or my flat iron? I’m sure I would get by just fine without these things, however I do like that they are available and ready when I need them.
What is your favorite device? What is the one thing you really would hate to live without?
We want to know.
