When I started my blog many years ago I knew nothing about blogging. It seemed to be something new that not a lot of people were doing at the time, or maybe I just thought it was new because I didn’t really know a lot about it. I simply sat down, picked a name, jumped on a free blogging platform and started writing. It was like an online journal for me. I didn’t expect anyone to read what I was writing and I certainly didn’t expect them to like it and come back.
Today I have readers from all over coming to my site to enter my giveaways, read my reviews, find out how my family is doing, look up recipes and get advice. It’s actually a little exciting when you think about it!
Given that people are actually stopping by, I’ve had to change the way I blog. I moved over from the free blog platform to a paid platform, that way I could have more control of my site (I own it, not someone else) and I have the freedom to advertise as I please without being penalized or take the chance of being shut down.
I have also learned how to tailor my site to my readers. By knowing who my readers are and where they come from I am able to better understand them and I can also try to tailor my posts more towards them.
We use analytics to help us understand our users. Things like embedded bi (business intelligence) can help keep track of who is visiting your websites. What am I talking about? This is the integration of BI tools into commonly used business applications. BI tools support an enhanced user experience with visualization, real-time analytics and interactive reporting.
Knowing your readers is so very important. I’m so glad I took the time to learn about my readers and can now cater to all of you!
