Did you know that April is Autism Awareness Month?
Not everyone knows what autism is, and to be honest up until a few years ago I didn’t know what autism was either.
When asked to review a DVD about autism at first I wasn’t sure what I was going to say. I don’t have children with autism, so why would I want to do a review on a DVD about autism? You know why I chose to review this DVD? I chose to review this DVD because there are many parents out there that do have children with autism. There are many parents out there that aren’t even sure what autism is. I thought, what the heck…I could use a little more education and awareness on this disorder, and why not spread the word so that others can be aware as well?
I am happy that I chose to review this product.
The filmmaker of this video is the father of an autistic child. His name is Todd Drezner.
The video is called, Loving Lampposts: Living Autistic.
What is the video about?
The video takes a look at the two movements: the “recovery movement,” which views autism as a tragic epidemic brought on by environmental toxins, and the “neurodiversity movement,” which argues that autism should be accepted and that autistic people should be supported.
Did you know that today autism affects approximately one out of every one hundred children? This is a substantial increase from one in 2,500 as diagnosed thirty years ago. In recent years, as autism has exploded into the public’s consciousness, two camps have formed: those who believe it is a devastating disease to be cured and those who feel that autism is just a variation of the human brain. First-time director, Todd Drezner, father of autistic son, Sam, has shared his personal journey of coming to terms with autism by taking a wide-angle view on the issue and presenting a heartfelt case that acceptance is the better way.
This is a great informative video and I am so glad that we were able to view it.
