Even though each type of aquatic or semi-aquatic turtle needs a different type of a habitat, still, there are some general things you need to follow. So, here is what you need to consider when making an ideal habitat for your pet turtle.

Aquarium

Both aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles need a plenty of room to live a comfortable, safe and healthy life. So, buy your pet a long and low enclosure that is spacious enough. In addition, divide an aquarium into two areas: a water area (about 70% of an aquarium) and a land area (about 30% of an aquarium). Clearly, for the water area, you will need to get a filter. As for the land area, use a dock, smooth rocks, and driftwood. Don’t forget to install a basking area or a platform. When it comes to a substrate, you should not use it in the water area. Temperature

When it comes to the right temperature, you have to measure it in both areas. The water temperature should be about 78 degrees F while the basking or land area should be about 85 degrees F. You definitely need to buy a thermometer, because that way, you will avoid overheating or under heating of a turtle tank. This is important, because the wrong temperature may lead to your turtle losing its appetite and getting sick.

Lighting

Both turtle types need a full spectrum light in order to be healthy and develop as they should. So, get UVA and UVB bulbs, as they will help in the creation of vitamin D3 as well as in mimicking the natural environment. In order to simulate natural light cycles, you have to buy a timer.

Cleaning

We all know that turtles are messy. This means that you will have to take cleaning a turtle tank seriously and do that on a regular basis. Since there will be much waste, a filter is essential. This will keep the turtle habitat safe and clean.

Also, you have to change the water regularly. Now, this will depend on the size of a turtle tank and on how effective the filtration system is. What also adds up to creating a messy habitat is overfeeding. So, make sure not to give your pet too much food, as that will be a waste of your time and money.
