Your options may appear limited when choosing an appropriate gift for an expectant mother. Having had 5 children of my own, I have found that it is nice when someone thinks not only of baby, but of Mom as well. Obviously, you cannot opt for the normally well-received bottle of wine. While gifts for the baby are certainly appreciated, you also want to choose a gift specifically for Mom since this is a special, yet often vulnerable time in her life. If you are stumped, the following nine gifts are sure to please an expectant mother. This is a guest post brought to you by expert Kathy Longwell (photography is ours).
Maternity compression clothing:
For all its beauty and wonder, let’s be straightforward about pregnancy. It can be downright uncomfortable. Most women begin feeling their clothing get snug very shortly after they learn of the new inhabitant in their bellies. Maternity compression clothes, such as maternity leggings, are excellent for improving circulation, which relieves fatigued muscles and reduces swelling. Clothes that are specifically fashioned for maternity will flatter her pregnant shape, so she can feel beautiful in her new body.
Maternity pillow:
Pregnancy-related insomnia is usually due to it being nearly impossible to get comfortable. Full-length body pillows and belly wedges are contoured specifically for pregnancy and provide excellent support for her belly and back.
Free babysitting:
If she has other children, offer her your free babysitting services every week or two. She can choose to have a day out, or perhaps just rest at home. Childcare on the days of her prenatal appointments may be particularly helpful.
Scrapbooking materials:
While baby books cover the baby’s first years, the pregnancy itself can be quickly forgotten. Since it is also a special time, give her the tools to create a keepsake pregnancy book that she will treasure forever. The book can include ultrasound images, monthly belly pictures, and important dates, such as baby’s first kicks.
Stash of freezable meals:
After the baby arrives, new mothers are often too exhausted to cook meals. When you are cooking dinner, make extra servings to feed her and her family. Freeze the leftovers, and give them to her as gift that she will certainly appreciate.
Spa day:
Pregnant women love being pampered, especially since life is about to get very busy. Book her an appointment at the spa. This can include an appointment with a hair stylist, massage therapist, and/or manicurist.
Home foot spa:
Foot spas with a vibrating basin to massage the feet are a practical and useful gift. The vibrations, along with the warm water, will soothe her swollen and tender feet.
Healthy snack basket:
Either buy or create a basket of quick and healthy snacks. At the end of her pregnancy, she will likely be hungry and fatigued. The baskets are also great for bringing to the hospital after she delivers.
Magazine subscription:
A lot of women enjoy reading while feeding their newborns, plus she will probably be spending a lot of time at home for the next year. Pay attention to her specific interests, and buy her a magazine subscription that she can enjoy. Pregnancy and motherhood magazines are a great option.
When selecting your gift, make sure you keep the expecting mother’s individuality in mind. For example, if you choose to gift her maternity clothes, pay attention to how she dresses now. Does she wear form-fitting clothes to flaunt the bump, or does she prefer loose-fitting tops that flow over her belly? With the above gift ideas and a little extra thought, you can certainly make the pregnant woman in your life feel special.
