Today was the day of our 8 year old son’s appointment with the Orthopedic specialist. I knew that it would take me at least an hour to get there, so we left a little early. My mother in law was riding along with me and the 3 boys that were going along. (2 of the boys were in school.) We got maybe 10 minutes down the road and my mother in law started to have a bit of anxiety. She is a very nervous rider. I took her back to my house, grabbed my sit n stand stroller, and headed back out the door. That first set back was minor, but was the start of a not so great day for me.
(For those that missed the first post, here is the photo again.)
We stop for gas and I set the gps so that I can find my way. I am really not familiar with the roads that I was driving on and really had no clue where I was going. We get about halfway there and my arms and hands start to tingle and feel numb and I start seeing spots. If you have ever had a migraine than you probably just said to yourself, I know exactly what she is talking about. If not, you are lucky. I get them from time to time and would not wish them upon anyone. All I could think about was getting to a gas station or something so that I could get some medicine. I know that if I get medicine in me before I actually feel the throbbing in my head then I can often get it under control. After driving about 10 more minutes I come across a drive-thru carry-out. I swing through and ask them if they have any Tylenol or anything. They do not, however they tell me that they have this new liquid medicine. (I’ll tell you more about this in another post.) At this point I am willing to try anything and just want relief, so I take it. We go on about our way and then we hit the school traffic….NO!
Now that I am stopped I pick up my cell phone and call my husband. I only had a few minutes before my appointment, so I ask him to call the doctor’s office to tell them that I am stuck in traffic, but on my way and will be there in a bit. By the time he got ahold of them I was actually in the parking garage and about 10 minutes late. I park the car, very fast (I actually bumped the cement wall in front of me as I was pulling in with my hubby’s new/used van…oops!) I blame it on the fact that he was calling me, I was trying to squeeze into the smallest spot ever, and my brakes were acting funny (they really were!) Ok, so I answer my husband’s call and he tells me that the doctor’s office said that they were cancelling my appointment because I wasn’t right on time. WHAT!? After all I had been through and driving over an hour there they are going to cancel my appointment because I’m 10 minutes late, even though I called to tell them!? I don’t think so! I quickly hung up the phone and marched my butt into the office. We get in there and it’s PACKED! I walk up to the window and tell the lady who we are and she says, your appointment is cancelled and I don’t know what to do. I say well I’m here, I drove over an hour with a migraine and 3 kids by myself and I would really like to see a doctor. She must have kids because I could see the sympathy and she put me back into the schedule. We waited about 45 minutes in the waiting room and then we were taken to a room. We did not get to see an actual doc, but saw a Physician Assistant. She took another x-ray, which she said looked fine and then told us that she isn’t sure what is wrong. REALLY? This is the 4th person we have seen and no one seems to know. So, she tells us to come back in 2 weeks and if he is still having symptoms she will do a bone scan or mri.
So, it’s been 3 weeks already. No one knows what is causing the pain and swelling on my son’s knee, and although several people have mentioned mri and bone scans, no one seems to want to do them. I’m frustrated at this point because I really just want someone to give me an idea of what could be going on, even if it’s something simple. (I’m a mom and I need to be reassured.) Now I have a decision to make…
We have already been to Urgent Care, our family doc, our new Pediatrician (who we are replacing our family doc with) and now the Physician Assistant at the Pediatric Orthopedic Specialist office at the Children’s Hospital.
What would you do?
Would you take your child to another doc?
Would you wait 2 weeks and take them back to the Physician Assistant?
Would you do something different all together?
