First of all, I want to start by saying Congratulations! Buying a home is a very exciting time in life and it is one to be celebrated. Now that you own your own home there may be some new and/or unexpected things that you haven’t dealt with in the past. Let’s take a moment today to go over those.
.) Change the Locks. You never know how many people had a key to the home before you purchased it, and you want to make sure you are safe in your new home. Changing the locks is the first step in ensuring your safety.
.) Clean. People will be tracking in and out of the home over the next few days/weeks. You will want to make sure your new home is clean when you start moving in. Sometimes previous owners have pets or don’t pull things out to clean behind them (appliances and so forth) due to being in a hurry moving into their new place.
.) Check furnace filters. This is another thing that is often overlooked. Make sure you check and if needed, replace your furnace filter. This will ensure that your furnace runs properly.
.) Change Light bulbs. You can often save yourself some money by changing to energy efficient light bulbs. It never hurts to do a walk through of the home to see if your light bulbs have already been updated.
.) Check the roof. You want to make sure you don’t have any missing shingles, or shingles that aren’t properly attached to the roof. You get ideas on what roofing is offered from a company such as Tampa Roofing.
.) Check gutters. You will want to make sure your gutters are clear of debris and properly attached to the home. You don’t want to have faulty gutters and end up with water pooling beside the home. This can cause a lot of damage to your home.
.) Set up all utilities and trash service. Many times people remember to contact the electric company and gas company, but they forget about trash removal and possibly other things such as cable and/or internet. Of course, these are optional, but if you do plan to use these services, it’s a good idea to set them up prior to or shortly after moving into your new home.
.) Make a grocery list. I know, this isn’t something most people have on their mind when moving, but to save yourself from running through and grabbing fast food or ordering in for the next week, you may want to plan some meals and prepare your grocery list. Make a quick run to the grocery so your fridge can be stocked for yourself and possibly guests helping you move into your new home.
.) Make sure doors have stoppers behind them. This is especially important if you have children, but even if you don’t have children, you will want to make sure your doors aren’t hitting the walls when they are being opened and closed. It can quickly cause a hole and damage to the drywall, which would be another expense to fix.
Now that you have an idea of some of the small things that you should do shortly after purchasing a home, you should plan some time to relax. Buying a home is exciting and fun, but moving can be stressful. Take your time and take time to sit back and relax.
