It really is a win win. My boys are learning to recycle and help the planet and in turn they are getting a reward for their efforts. We have taught our boys about recycling bottles, cans and paper, but recycling electronics is new to us. Think about it though, with the growth of the digital world and all of the newest electronics coming out every year, many of us have them just lying around the house, and some of us toss them into the trash. STOP. You could be recycling those electronics. Not only are you helping the planet by recycling them, but you can also make a little cash for yourself (or to purchase your new electronics).
ecoATM did a nationwide survey that showed 57 percent of American device owners have idle cell phones in their homes, yet only 22 percent said that they have previously recycled cell phones they no longer use. Mark Bowles, the founder and Chief Marketing Officer of ecoATM said, “Electronic waste is the fastest growing segment of our waste stream, and it’s a problem that’s only getting worse as more and more new phones and tablets are coming to market each year.”
ecoATM is the perfect solution for all of these unwanted electronics that are just sitting around collecting dust.
What is ecoATM?
ecoATM is the nationwide network of automated electronic recycling kiosks located in shopping malls and select Walmart stores. The first ecoATM was installed in September 2009. There are now approximately 900 kiosks in malls and large retailers in 42 states. The really great part is that you can receive CASH for your electronics when you recycle them at an ecoATM. Cash given for mobile devices ranges from $1 to $300 per device, and every transaction provides an opportunity to donate some or all proceeds to charity.
ecoATM is able to find a second life for 75 percent of devices collected. For the remaining 25 percent of devices, ecoATM partners with certified eWaste reclamation facilities to ensure those materials are responsibly reused and recycled. By providing cash payments for unwanted mobile phones, tablets and MP3 players that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill, ecoATM has recycled more than 500,000 pounds of devices in its 4 year history! Isn’t that amazing!?
This is something simple that your family can do to help the environment and make a little extra cash. Our boys are super excited about recycling their old cell phones and MP3 players and making a little extra cash for fun summer activities!
