Thinking about Christmas cards already?
I have been. As a matter of fact, I have been taking family photos for people that are preparing their Christmas cards. I have yet to get a great photo of my family of 7, but that takes time, right? My best tips for a great family photo are…
1.) Be sure to schedule your photos around naps and at a time that your children will be at their best–don’t do it around lunchtime or when they are hungry because it’s bound to be a disaster.
2.) A little treat never hurt. I know, I know, we shouldn’t bribe our children to do what we want, however a reward for good behavior is always great, right!? (How do you think I get 5 boys to all look at a camera and smile for me?)
3.) Make sure there is plenty of lighting. You don’t want the photo to be too dark. Outdoor photos are always great because you don’t have to worry a lot about light.
4.) Pick a location that you know well and are comfortable taking photos at. We like to take photos at our house, either by our Christmas tree or on our porch.
5.) A fast snapping camera is always great when working with children. I like to snap fast and hope for the best. Typically there are a ton of “not great” photos, but I usually can find that one “gem photo” when I’m snapping away.
6.) Have fun! Be sure that YOU are ready when taking the photos. Make sure you have plenty of memory on your memory card and that you are in a happy mood. Oh, and make sure your tummy is full too, you never know how long the photo shoot will take.
Do you have any tips to add to the list?
