Have you ever felt like you really had to do something?
I have and I’m going to share my story with you all now.
For the past couple of months I have been trying to find a way that I could help those less fortunate during the holiday season. I like to have my boys get involved in this so they can feel like they have done good and helped someone out as well. I want them to see that the holidays are not just about receiving, but are also about giving.
While searching for some way to help others I kept finding myself unsure of weather I was choosing the right method. I prayed about it and one day (about two weeks ago) I woke up and I knew what I was supposed to do. Now, this may sound weird to some of you, but I feel like God told me that I needed to follow this path, so here I am.
Just wait, it gets sillier.
I feel like I was being told to start a Sock and Underwear drive for children. Of course, all donations would have to be new for sanitary reasons, but as funny as this sounded it just kept weighing on my heart. I told several people about this and they sort of chuckled and thought I was silly. My husband actually asked me why I didn’t just collect food or clothing. My response was, there are many people giving food and clothing. I feel that since people think socks and underwear are silly, or since they don’t really even think of them at all, it might be the best thing, plus I feel like that is what God has told me to do.
At our bible study last night our pastor asked us, What is God calling you to do? Immediately my sister and I looked at one another and laughed. Of course, I had to explain and guess what? No one there thought I was crazy, nor did they think it was silly. That really motivated me, so I went home and I began to do some research.
I knew that my first step was to find an organization that would take my donations, so I called one. I actually had a list in front of me with a couple of different organizations to call. The very first one I called, which is actually just down the road from our church, was so happy to hear from me. They stated that there is a great need for socks and underwear and that they would be happy to have the items. They also said that this is one of the first items people ask for when they come in, however they don’t receive many donations for these items, so they have a shortage. (This made me feel good, not that they had a shortage, but that I had definitely chosen the right path.)
