Twenty-twenty has been a really weird year, and it has many of us re-evaluating the way we do things. Maybe you have spent more time in your home and now you are wondering why you have held onto so many of the items that you don’t really use on a regular basis? Or, maybe you simply feel like things are cluttered now that you are using your home space more often?
Downsizing can be overwhelming. Many people don’t know where to start. There are also things that may feel bittersweet when getting rid of them. Maybe you are excited for the change, but a little sad about the thought of parting with something you have had in your life for a long period of time.
This is the perfect opportunity for you to decide what you value the most. If you can sort out the clutter, you will be able to fill your space with the things that you really love, without feeling cluttered.
The First Steps to Downsizing is to Start With a Plan.
When de-cluttering, it’s best to start by choosing a room. This will make things much easier and keep you more focused. Often when you don’t choose a room, you will find yourself wondering from room to room trying to de-clutter, and it will leave you even more stressed than you were before you started. Don’t start out with defeat. Make a plan, and get started.
The Next Steps to Downsizing is To Sort What You Have.
Sorting can actually be fun. Start by designating areas for different items. One pile will be for things you haven’t used in over a year. These items will be placed in the donate/toss pile. This is also a great place for the extras. If you own more than one coffee maker (or other item), consider donating the extra items to a good cause, or sell them online for some extra cash.
The next pile you will want to make is the Keep pile. If you can’t decide if you should keep the item or toss the item, then you can probably live without the item, and it should go in the toss pile.
It is best to make several piles such as give away, donate, resale, trash. Once you have your designated spots for the items you are sorting, things will go much smoother.
The Final Steps to Downsizing is to Get Organized.
Now that you have de-cluttered and you no longer have all of the extra items taking up space in your home, you will want to get organized. You can start by making a space for all of your items, labeling things, and putting them in their designated spaces. Once you are organized, you will feel much less stress and it will be much easier to live and work from the space.
