Does anyone else struggle with pet hygiene? I’m going to be honest, when we got our first pet hygiene wasn’t really top of mind. I mean, it wasn’t something I even really thought about. I wanted that cute cuddly puppy and knew that we would need to feed, brush, walk and bathe her, but outside of that, I didn’t really consider anything else. There is so much more care that goes into getting a pet.
Things to Consider When Getting a Pet (Dog specifically):
- Pet-Proof Your Home– This is so important. Just like bringing home a new baby, you will want to make sure your home is safe for your pet. Are there electrical cords that your pet could chew on (puppies especially)? Make sure that all cleaning supplies, medicines and anything else that can be harmful to a pet are put up and out of the way. Did you know that some plants and essential oils are harmful to pets? Be sure to do some research before bringing your furry friend into the home.
- Food Choice– You will want to make sure you choose an age and breed appropriate food for your new pet. Not all pet foods are alike, so do a little reasearch so you can choose the best food for your pet. Choosing the right treats are also important as well.
- Dental Hygiene– This isn’t something we often think about, but you will want to make sure you are choosing good quality dog dental chews for your new pet. Just like humans, it is important to make sure your pet has a clean mouth. Plus, who wants stinky dog breath?
- Pet Bed/Crate– Make sure you purchase the proper size crate for your pet if you plan to crate him/her up when you leave, or at night. Some pets prefer sleeping in a crate. Some pet owners will buy a small pet bed for their pets to nap on.
- Collars, Leashes, Tags– Different sized pets need different sized collars and leashes. You will want to buy the proper size for your pet now, but may have to upgrade as your pet continues to grow. Having the proper tags in case your pet runs off is important as well.
- Find a Veterinarian– You will want to establish a relationship with a Veterinarian that you trust with your new furry friend. They will be able to help you get started on your journey as a new pet owner and can recommend care options going forward.
- Food & Water Bowls– Don’t forget that you will need to be equipped with bowls to feed and water your new pet. Smaller pets can get by with something smaller while you may need something larger for a bigger pet. There are many options for purchasing pet food and water bowls.
- Proper Toys– Not all toys are created equally, and while one toy may be great for one pet, it isn’t always great for another. You will want to do a little research to make sure you are purchasing the proper pet toys for your lovable new pet.
- Pet Grooming– Keeping your pet groomed is also important. You will want to make sure they get regular baths and are brushed often, but you will also want to make sure their nails stay trimmed back and they get regular haircuts (if they have longer fur). There are some great pet grooming products on the market that make it easier for you to do these things in the comfort of your own home.
