Zumba® Party in Pink™ Movement Raises Half a Million Dollars

for Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

Zumba Fitness Rallies 50,000 Supporters Nationwide

Through its inaugural Party in Pink™ program, one of this year’s most innovative initiatives for breast cancer awareness month, Zumba Fitness is donating $550,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Zumba Fitness’ network of enthusiastic and dedicated instructors rallied more than 50,000 supporters to participate in 788 Zumbathon fitness classes in all 50 states with 75 percent of each ticket sold donated to the organization along with 30 percent of all proceeds from the sale of limited-edition Party in Pink Zumbawear™ shirts and bracelets.

“The outpouring of passion for this cause among our instructors and Zumba fans has been nothing short of spectacular,” said Alberto Perlman, CEO of Zumba Fitness. “What started as a small gesture to support this initiative close to many of our hearts in a short time exploded into a national phenomenon and a significant fundraiser for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Beyond the financial benefits, Party in Pink has also encouraged tens of thousands of men and women throughout the country to embrace a healthy lifestyle by having fun while getting fit – a key factor in preventing breast cancer and other illnesses.”

According to Katrina McGhee, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, “Awareness and exercise are extremely important when it comes to reducing your risk of breast cancer. Our partnership with Zumba allows us to reach people in all 50 states with a fun way to exercise while providing the setting to start a conversation about breast health and breast cancer.”

Zumba Fitness is known for its sexy dance moves that have women and men of all ages shaking their hips to Latin and international rhythms. According to many of the breast cancer survivors who participated in the Party in Pink movement, the fun in Zumba’s fitness party has helped them through the emotional distress of their disease. “I’m able to leave my emotions and cares and troubles at the door for that hour and focus primarily on being happy and healthy and dancing, and having a great time,” said Susan Morrow-Veitch, breast cancer survivor and Zumba enthusiast. “It’s really proven to be an instrumental part in my emotional well-being.”

Dr. Barry Lembersky, a medical oncologist at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute with patients who take Zumba classes, agrees. “Exercise is increasingly recognized to improve the prognosis and quality of life for breast cancer survivors. Of all the exercises that I have seen, I think Zumba really hits the mark.”
